Free Museum Night in Europe is This Week

Plan your night of free art.

For the 8th year, admission to museums and cultural institutions across Europe will be free for Museum Night (or La Nuit Européene des Musées) on Saturday, May 19th. This night has grown to include around 3,000 museums in 40 countries that stay open until midnight (or even later, in some cases).

In the U.K., the whole weekend—May 18th to 20th—is full of events. Here’s a great blog about what’s going on there. (And in case you were wondering why May 18th—it’s International Museum Day.)

The Musée d’Orsay in Paris will be taking part, and using the opportunity to unveil their newly refurbished galleries. A new Impressionist Gallery and space for Gustave Courbet’s large scale works are two highlights—detailed here—and the museum will also be offering presentations and musical performances.

In Warsaw? The National Museum of Warsaw is re-opening its doors after renovations in time for Museum Night.

In Rome? The Museo di Roma – Palazzo Braschi is taking part. More info on Rome’s offerings here.

FMD could go on, but we have neither the space nor the time to get into the deets of 3,000 offerings. We’re stuck in New York—and practically faint with envy.

So if you’re lucky enough to be in a European city that’s taking part in Museum Night, do some research, plan your night—you’ll have about 6 hours to see everything you want to see. And wear comfortable shoes.
